Our goal is to provide nice apartment units in our area for some of those who are currently homeless or in an unlivable condition. It is a privilege to help people who have lost their previous homes, perhaps almost everything they had.
Many homeless people live in shelters. Some share a room with five or more people. Some even sleep on floors in the shelters. Some even sleep under bridges, in tents, in abandoned houses, in cars, or anywhere they find to lay their heads.
Recently I talked with a young woman who slept under a building.
A few days ago, I met a young couple with a baby. The man was supposed to start a new job in a week. In the meantime, he was short just $15 for them to stay in a motel for one night. Where were they to go after that?
I could not help any of these people. It's hard to just wish I could do something. I think these are decent people who need a boost in the right direction.
The only hope I have is believing that some day very soon I will be able to offer people like these a nice place off the streets. The basic advantage I have today is knowing our team will soon do the very best we can to provide for some of the local homeless people, and I won't have to worry and regret that there was nothing I could do for them.
No, we can't offer them a mansion, but any cozy, comfortable living quarters would be enough to give them back their pride, dignity, self-respect, and hope of a better future.
